Is Uploading a Passport Image Required for ESTA Application?
Since 2022, uploading the passport's face photo page (biometric information page) is mandatory in the U.S. ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) application. This system is designed to automatically recognize the application content and prevent input errors.
Required Passport Image for Upload
The image to be uploaded is the page containing the face photo of the passport. Images taken with a smartphone or digital camera are acceptable.
- The face photo, name, and passport number are clearly visible
- The entire page is within the frame
- The lower MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) is readable
- No blurriness, reflection, or shadows
How to Upload Passport for ESTA【Steps】
1. Capture the Passport Image
Take the photo in a bright location, avoiding shadows or reflections.
A plain wall as the background is ideal.
2. Start Application on ESTA Official Site
As you proceed through the ESTA application form, the passport image upload screen will appear.

3. Upload the Passport Image
Select the image from "Choose File," or if using a smartphone, take the photo on the spot and upload it.
4. Confirm Auto-filled Information
Information read from the image will be automatically filled in, so please confirm there are no errors.
